Description

BNNT consists of boron (B) and nitrogen (N) atoms in its structure and it is the cylindrical form of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) with approximately 1-100 diameter and varying lengths.

Although BNNTs are structural analog of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), they have considerably differed in their physical, chemical and electronic properties. BNNTs are electrical insulator with nearly 5.5 eV band gap independently from their chirality. They may reach a Young modulus of 0.5-1.2 TPa, which makes them very strong material mechanically. BNNTs are more stable to oxidation and heat compared to CNTs. They have also high hydrogen storage capacity, radiation absorption, high thermal conductivity, and show high piezoelectric property. Due to their highly biocompatible feature BNNTs are considered as special nanostructures in biomedical applications.

Application areas: Flame-resistant materials, radiation shielding, piezoelectric devices, thermally conductive insulators, electrically insulating, polymer composites, sensors, biomedical, ceramic composites
